Poker Phrases

Action:

The time a player is to do something. A participant might say to the dealer “Who has the action” if they have lost track of whose turn it is.

Ante:

A small amount of money put into the pot by all of the players at the start of every poker hand.

Burn:

This is the process of issuing the top playing card from the deck, face down. This is performed between every betting round prior to handing out the next community playing card(s). This acts as a security against a player recognizing or glimpsing the next playing card to be used on the board.

Complete Hand:

A poker hand that is made up out of all five cards – a straight flush, straight, flush or full house

House:

The institution that runs the game

Inside Straight:

A hand consisting of four cards needed to make a straight with one playing card in the middle absent.

Kicker:

The unpaired playing card used to determine the superior of two near-equivalent hands

Muck:

The pile of playing cards either folded or burned in front of the dealer.

Open-ended straight:

A hand of four sequential playing cards that needs one more card at either end to complete a straight.

Pocket:

The cards in a players possession that only she/he are able to see.

Protect:

The act of keeping your poker hand by putting a chip on them so that it’s not fouled by a discarded poker hand or accidentally mucked by the dealer.

Quads:

Four of the same value.

Rank:

A numerical worth given to a playing card (not the suit).

Tell:

Some indication that a participant (but not meaning to) gives off indicating a little about their hand to others.

Toke:

A small portion of the pot that a winning player may give to the dealer (a kind of tip).

Trips:

Three of the same ranking.

Variance:

The changes in your funds, when the changes in your bankroll are large your variance is higher.
